I just came across a news report highlighting an absolutely wonderful Pilates program in Monterey, California, that helps people diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.
While Parkinson’s can’t be cured, the symptoms and side effects can often be managed, and exercise has proven to be an important coping strategy.
According to the Michael J. Fox Foundation:
“There is evidence that exercise may hold specific benefits for people with Parkinson’s in staying active and relatively limber, and improving balance and motor coordination.”
It really hits close to home for us as we’ve been working with several students that are dealing with Parkinson’s. The power of Pilates to address neurological issues continues to be proven, as it combines several benefits. Pilates can:
- Heighten neuromuscular coordination.
- Increase joint range of motion and enhance mobility.
- Restore postural alignment.
- Reduce stress and boost energy.
In short, Pilates can offer a better quality of life.
There are several great programs using Pilates, Yoga, and Dance/Ballet that are helping Parkinson’s patients continue to move. I loved seeing this video, and I love that so many people are benefiting from Pilates!

We’ve added a new evening beginner | intermediate Pilates mat class on Wednesdays at 5:30 pm, beginning July 9th. Come unwind after work with instructor Heather Thompson, and strengthen your entire body with our personalized small mat class.
Also beginning in July is our monthly Yamuna Body Rolling class. This class starts on July 13th from 1-3 pm. Classes will take place on the second Sunday of each month. This work goes deeper than stretching alone. Great stress release work in our fast paced life!
